Side menu overlaying rather than pushing center content

In the current implementation of the side menus, the side menu pushes the center content over in order to display the side menu.

I would rather have the side menu look as if it is overlaying the center content. So, the center content would remain stationary and the side menu would look like it is pulling across.

Is there a way to do this? Is there an example of this effect?

Not right out of the box, but you can always make a feature request for it
