Ionic-view custom icons

I am using icons from ionicons.com in an ion-tab page footer. I created a css style to give the icons a custom background color to match the rest of the app. This works great with ionic serve. But when I upload the app and view it on my device the icons have the default white background.

Any suggestions?

Every platform has its set of classes. What works in the desktop browser may not work in the Android or the iOS environment.
