Ion-select not working as expected. Orientation problem

Ion-select orientation issue. It appears horizontal while ionic 2 documentation shows it should appear vertical. Below is the code I am using.

      <ion-label>Watering Mode</ion-label>
      <ion-select >
        <ion-option>Option 1</ion-option>
        <ion-option>Option 1</ion-option>
        <ion-option>Option 1</ion-option>
      </ion-select>
    </ion-item>

I think the issue lies elsewhere, because I dropped that into a scratch project (inside an ion-list) and the three "Option 1"s were vertically stacked.
