How to reverse the positions of back button and menu button

When using the side menu I would like to anchor the menu icon (‘ion-navicon’) to the left of the nav-bar and have the back button appear on the right. I cannot get this to work. Right now I am stuck with :

    <ion-nav-bar class="bar-positive"> 
            <ion-nav-buttons side="left">
                <button menu-toggle="left" class="button button-icon icon ion-navicon"></button>
            </ion-nav-buttons>  
      
<ion-nav-back-button class="button-clear"><i class="icon ion-chevron-left"></i></ion-nav-back-button>

I tried several alternatives including putting these in divs and floating them left and right but nothing seems to work.
