Determine if any modals are open?

Does anyone know how I would be able to determine whether or not my application has a modal window open?

I have a PIN entry screen which appears in my app if the user has been inactive for 5 minutes - this works fine unless the user has a modal window open - in that situation, my PIN screen appears behind it so I need to check for this and close it. Not sure how!

This might be silly, but have you tried making your PIN screen a modal?
