iPhone and iPad design compatibility

I have developed mobile app using IONIC framework 1. My app design should look perfect on iPhone 5 to latest iPhone 8 as well as iPad.

What should be the proper design approach to achieve this? Using media query I have tried a lot but facing issue. It looks proper on iPhone but doesn’t look fine with iPad. If I do some setting for iPad then it doesn’t work with iPhone.

Looking forward for tips on how to achieve this.

I have learnt from experience it is best to design for the smallest screen size you want to support (in my case iPhone 5) and then use media query to extend elements as required for larger screen sizes.
