Ionic 2 placeholder

In the Ionic 2 docs for virtual Scroll it states the following when talking about the ‘ion-img’ html element:

“Additionally, it includes a customizable placeholder element which shows before the image has finished loading.”

I cannot see a placeholder when I use ion-img and I cannot find any information on how to implement the placeholder, anyone know?
