Why is Ionic Storage included in all Ionic projects?

I just noticed that Ionic Storage is per default included in all Ionic projects via the Ionic2 App Base package.json:

Why is this? Of course it is handy to have around, but still, it is a separate library that takes space and time to download/install. I couldn’t find any usages of Ionic Storage in the other Framework Code. Did I miss anything?
